BEHIND STORY
as mentioned in the notes i started writing this fic as a backup plan from when i participated in olymfics 2019. the first draft i was working on wasn’t turning out well (tbh i never got past the first scene even though i was extremely ambitious about it - i even made moodboards and all) and then in panic i started thinking maybe crack is my forte after all????? i came up with this then, but i didn’t have a solid plan for it and couldn’t figure out the purpose, the conflict and the end goal so i aborted it. idk if it’s worth mentioning but i had four different drafts (with four completely different stories) for my olymfics submission.
i forgot why and how but for some reason i picked this fic up again somewhere in 2021 and wrote a couple of scenes. i even had a friend read it over for me (in a gdoc which i named “pronounced dead but came back to life”) but then i got stuck at one particular scene and abandoned the whole thing again. then i think half a year ago i went back to this draft and stared at the problematic scene dead in the eye and told myself i need to win this. i was simultaneously working on two different wips at that time - not actively, it was more like i’d work on whichever that i had ideas for - and then somehow starting in the past month i began to work on this fic like crazy and felt insanely motivated to finish it by the end of the year. i actually wrote around 7k in a month.
INSPIRATION
there are a lot of funny details about this fic actually but the funniest thing to me is that the whole idea came from this one local movie that is actually so cringe that i never watched it in full yet so entertaining i never really got over the plot. i’m embarrassed to admit it but it’s true. i also referenced little forest a little - my seungcheol is based on ryu junyeol’s character in the movie with a dash of kita-san.
THOUGHTS
i’d like to think that i made some bold decisions regarding this fic. by bold i mean funny, like, 1) dowoon being an ass and not giving him a redemption arc, 2) jaebeom not being the tsundere older brother like i always portray him as (well he still has his kind side but he genuinely finds his younger sister annoying), 3) the side characters, although some of them were impromptu ideas.
here are some regrets and things i forgot to or couldn’t include in the fic:
1. one of my favourite things about little forest is jaeha’s casual way of taking care of haewon and i wanted to imitate that actually. i really wish i added more details about seungcheol knowing nayeon inside out
2. suzy was supposed to appear in the barbecue restaurant scene and her character was someone nayeon recognized because she modelled for a certain fashion brand once which became super popular but she never became a celebrity. i honestly really wanted to include this but the scene was getting unnecessarily long
3. jaebeom actually thinks the person nayeon has feelings for is seungcheol’s brother, hence the misunderstanding
4. originally when i figured out how to end the fic i was going to write a notting hill-esque ending scene (4:08 if the time stamp didn't work for you) but that didn't work out unfortunately
OTHER THINGS
not at all important to the fic but i just want everyone to know that when i moved the draft from my plot dump gdoc to its own gdoc i titled it “this one’s for you kita-san” because 1) i dedicate seungcheol’s character to him, 2) kita-san’s expectant chanto yannen gives me the pressure that i needed.
also for a long time i couldn’t figure out what’s a good title for the fic so i listened to a lot of random songs for inspiration. then i came across yerin’s antifreeze and when i read the lyrics i thought of nayeon’s character and her friendship with seungcheol.
