“Try wasting one hour waiting for an idiot like you.”

“I’m coming, I’m coming!” Sungchan says into the phone, then hangs up, laughing. Adjusting the strap of his duffle bag around his shoulder, he takes his sweet time walking down the staircase, ignoring the way his phone continues to buzz nonstop with incoming texts.

He hears the honks as he approaches the front door before he even sees the car parked right outside. “Geez, you’ve got anger issues,” he says casually when he gets into the car.

“Try wasting one hour waiting for an idiot like you,” Yujin retorts. Her murderous glare is a lot more on point today than on typical days when he sees her.

“It’s not even one hour,” he says, shoving his bag behind, then glances at the analog clock on the dashboard. It reads 13.02, but the clock is 3 hours and 56 minutes ahead and Yujin gave up trying to fix it after the third time. “I only took 54 minutes,” he grins. His math is on point today, too.

She rolls her eyes and doesn’t wait until he’s put on his seatbelt to start the engine and pull out from the curb. “Why do I even have to drive you?” she grumbles as he goes through the CDs inside the console box. Her car is a hand-me-down passed on to her from her older sister, and before that it used to be their family car. It’s become a part of the Ahn house image to him, and when Yujin started driving it to university, it felt like she’s brought a piece of their neighbourhood here.

“You’re the one between us with a car,” Sungchan replies.

“But why do I have to drive you?”

“Because we’re neighbours? You want me to waste 15,000 won taking a bus back home when you can drive me for free? Think about the carbon footprint!” he says. He still vividly remembers the scowl on Yujin’s face that winter break when he ran into her and her mum at the mart, and her mum excitedly told him, what a relief, our Yujinnie is going to the same university as you! “Think about my mum’s disappointed face if you show up without me. And your mum’s disappointed face.”

“Shut up, Jung Sungchan,” she says after an attempt to make a swipe at him, which he narrowly missed.

“I’m two years older than you.”

“Whatever. You’re buying me tonkatsu at the rest stop,” she tells him. “And corn dogs.”

He finally decides on a CD—an old Lee Moonse album that his dad used to play in their car—and slots it into the player. “I’ll throw in Jaws Bar for you if you call me oppa.”

She sticks her tongue out at him. “Never.”
