oh boy! fic commentary

oh boy! | sungchan/yujin, 3018 words

BEHIND STORY

i've wanted to write a sungchan/yujin fic for the longest time (ever since she was still izone and he was still nct) (for real i still remember my reaction when inkigayo announced them as the new mcs) but my taichihaya headcanon of them is too strong i hadn't been able to come up with anything. even when i started writing this (i literally forced myself to write the first scene during a long haul flight) i had zero plans for the plot.

i think it's also worth mentioning that i haven't come up with a fic idea from scratch for a while. besides the terrace house au, all my recent fics are old drafts that i continued, resuscitated or started over. and because of that, i actually went through many fics by one of my most respected writers aka ao3 user yoonbot (iverins) to study fic structures. if you're reading this sapphy thank you for your service TT___TT

GENERAL OVERVIEW

i have several confessions to make about this fic:
1. for the first scene, i plagiarized myself off this one fic draft that i never finished and have no intention to continue. i like to liken this to organ donation.
2. as mentioned, i never had a clear idea of how i wanted this fic to go when i first started it. the only concept i had in my mind was "yujin hates sungchan's guts, especially the fact that he's popular in school"
3. tbh my first draft was completely different than the end product and i ultimately decided to delete an entire scene that i actually liked because the fic wasn't heading into the direction i wanted (also i didn't know how to pick up from there)
4. no lies all the details i wrote i thought them up on the spot

yea. i still don't know what got into me but i wrote most of this everyday in the last two weeks like crazy. it was SO difficult at first because i haven't written anything in so long and i pretty much figured out how to write each scene spontaneously, but after starting over and when i started to include all those memories and details of yujin and sungchan's relationship, i started to get a clearer idea. i actually had to stop myself from including too much of those flashbacks.

MAYBE I'M A GENIUS AFTER ALL?

not to be an insufferable person but i wrote this fic commentary just to post the deleted scene. everyone please look at this banger

“I know some girls would kill to be you, or maybe they’d kill you first if they knew you guys were so close,” Yuna had laughed then. “I wish I had someone like that growing up, though. Sounds fun. It’s like having a big brother, but you get to return them to his parents at the end of the day.”

Except Yujin never wanted a big brother, especially not someone like Jung Sungchan. “I’ll pass. You can have him,” she’d said in return. “I’d rather Song Eunseok.”

Well, she wasn’t exactly telling the truth when she said she’d rather have a brother like Song Eunseok, but it wasn’t a total lie that Yujin preferred him to Sungchan. Unlike Sungchan who causes troubles everywhere he goes, Song Eunseok is the kind of kid your mother compares you to. It’s a mystery why they’re even friends.

“Well, he talked to me first,” Sungchan said when Yujin asked about it during a bus ride. “We were in the same class, but it’s not like our tables were next to each other’s. We’re not even in the same club, but he went out of his way to talk to me. He probably likes me.”

She rolled her eyes. “He probably still regrets doing that.”

“Keep saying that, and I’ll tell Eunseok about your big fat crush on him,” Sungchan returned, smirking at her while quirking his brows.

Blood rushed to her cheeks. “I don’t have a big fat crush on him!” she said, a tad too loud for a 7am bus. Even the middle aged man in his business suit who’d been napping in the seat in front of them startled awake and glanced back at her. “I’ll kill you if you do.”

Sungchan took it as a challenge, apparently, because five hours later he came over to her table at the cafeteria with none other than Song Eunseok in tow. Yujin nearly choked on her third Yakult — she’d bought a whole pack and was drinking them in a row without even ripping them out of the plastic wrapper. “Hello,” Sungchan said all too cheerfully.

“What do you want?” Yujin asked through her teeth while maintaining a girl group idol worthy smile.

“Just wanted to say hi to my juniors,” he answered before flashing a smile at Yuna.

Bullshit, she wanted to say, but held herself back. Eunseok watched them wordlessly with his brown boba eyes, neither smiling nor frowning. He’s chic like that, she’d told Yuna once when Yuna commented that his resting face looked rather scary. Like he’s constantly judging you, Yuna’d said.

“Hey Eunseok, did I tell you that Yujin used to beat up the boys who broke her heart?” Sungchan began all of a sudden.

Yujin kicked his foot under the table. If it hurt, he didn’t let it show on his face or stop him from spewing more nonsense. He turned to her and grinned.

“Remember that boy you liked back in middle school? What was his name again - Hong Seunghan? Didn’t you kick him on the shin when he rejected you?”

“I did not!” she countered, exasperated. “I did not even like him. I kicked him for a completely different reason. Stop spreading lies about me.”

“But you did kick him,” Yuna, ever the betrayer, pointed out, which made Sungchan guffaw so hard his entire body started to shake. Even Eunseok was laughing along.

“You better be careful around her and not break her heart, Eunseok,” Sungchan added, still holding his stomach.

“Why would I break her heart?” was Eunseok’s reply.

Yujin was so taken aback she forgot whatever that she was going to say to Sungchan when he leaned in to whisper “You can thank me later~” in her ear as he got up. She said nothing even when he tousled her hair roughly on purpose and stole her untouched red bean bread that she’d fought the other kids for before leaving with the most smug grin on his face.

FINAL THOUGHTS

in the end this is just an extremely ao3 user hachimitsuto brand ao3 user hachimitsuto pandering fic. honestly while studying sapphy and my fic structures i realized we have pretty much the same plot graphs for almost all of our fics lmao. not a bad thing though (i think).
